Blog Post IV: Evaluation

This module varied over the months; it taught me the importance of branding and how a logo(or an ident) can set the mood for the whole organisation and either make it successful and recognisable or the exact opposite. It also allowed me to work in a big group where team work was really important. Unfortunately this didn’t go as smoothly as it could have. I think the lack of team work and participating in all of the group meeting and sessions let us down a little. It didn’t allow us to prepare and rehears as well as we could have. We had a few disagreements and at the end, closer to the deadline, all the work was on the shoulders of a small group of individuals.

However at the end we pulled ourselves together and managed to create a fun, spontaneous and concise show. We had interesting guests including a skype interview with a VP of operations at TrendHunter, Shelby Walsh (all the way from Canada) and a fashion designer student, Caroline Karro. We managed to create a good, professionally looking set which is an important part of a tv programme and even included some props from the performing arts department.

I think that the content itself was well chosen and represented our theme nicely. One lecturer mentioned lack of announcements of whats coming up etc and I agree with this to some degree. At the very end of the show we didn’t really have time to announce the last VT clip and the performance but I think this little slip up didn’t make the show any less interesting.

Overall I think that we did a good job with the tv show, especially when it was a first time in a studio for some of us. I also think that the first part of the course, taught us the importance of branding which made it easier for us to create our logos, idents and the website which is an important part of any tv show.


Blog Post III: Professional Development

pistachio-logo.gifOver the past few months I have learned the importance of self branding, being professional and creative. The media world is enormous and online presence is key to being noticed. Unfortunately I’m one of the young people that doesn’t find social networks such as Facebook and Twitter that appealing. I prefer applications and websites which are more private, can be used easily for communicating without everyone knowing everything and/or have a certain feel of closure. According to this article I’m not the only one.

This made it difficult for me to to create an online presence which would stand out from the rest and attract the right kind of audience. However at the same time, I kept my online presence tidy and professional. I have a Facebook account which I occasionally check for updates but don’t post on it myself. I don’t have a twitter account because I know that I wouldn’t really post anything on it.

I do own two tumblr blogs which I update regularly. I set it up my professional/work blog after creating my logo. I use my logo or my name wherever I post my work. This way, whoever sees my work will associate it with my name. An advantage of tumblr is that it has a community of people with similar interests to yours. This way my posts are more likely to be seen by other people with similar style compared to wordpress or wix where it’s more difficult to find blogs which suit a specific fan base.

As a first year I think it is more beneficial for me to use sites such as tumblr which are used my media professionals as well as beginners and artists from all around the world. This way I can create a portfolio of work for a future, more professional website where I can truly advertise myself.


Blog Post II: Transmedia

Not so long ago the only media output we had were newspapers, tv and radio. The audience were consumers of said media, we had no say in whats being shown, no interaction. Recently this has changed. Social media and apps allowed for interaction with the content. We are no longer the consumers, we are(as D. Gauntlett said) prosumers. The audience is not only watching tv shows but also responding to it by creating their own content. With services such as youtube, tumblr and reddit we can easily share user generated content based on the tv shows that we watched.

Another thing that became popular with the presence of social networking is a “live” conversation with the audience. We constantly see “hashtags” and links to countless facebook pages, instagrams and twitters. We are slowly getting to the point where the TV show content is audience driven. This revolutionised and changed the way TV programmes are/will be made. Audience can now participate in voting, discussion and even activate micro content through apps (such as shazam)  and social networking.

One example of this is a “companion app”, Shazam. Originally intended to “listen” to songs playing in the background and magically recognising said song, now can also be used while watching TV programmes to unlock special content all in one, convenient app. This shows that media is no longer cross platform, reaching to its audience from various devices and media outlets but also(and more importantly) its multi platform. This means that we no longer concentrate on the tv, we also user our smartphone, tablet and/or pc. Media world has to adapt to this change by creating content on all of these devices and creating it in a way that targets the user of said device. The introduction of smart devices means that it is easy to watch TV and at the same time checking facebook or reading a newspaper on a tablet. This is called Content Gazing and this is what most multi-device users do. TV programmes need to create creative and engaging content to drive the audience to “Spider-web”, which means using the different devices to investigate, interact and share content from the same show on multiple devices.

Blog Post I: Development

Spontaneity is a difficult theme. How can a show practiced for 2 or so months be spontaneous? We found the idea of this quite challenging but it didn’t stop us, we started brainstorming straight away. We came up with the idea of an eco fashion show. We chose it because it’s quite different and original. After doing some research and looking through some vt’s we decided to alter our idea a little bit by filming the Coventry residents answering some random questions as well as having a performance in our show and a “random moment” during the show.

I wasn’t personally close to the research of VTs because I was responsible for the graphics which would be shown throughout the show. My ideas changed and developed as the ideas for the show changed. Earlier in the year I learned about the importance of branding and how the logo or the opening sequence can set a pace and a theme for the whole company/show. This meant that I really had to think about the opening sequence for it to nicely represent what our show is about, as well as be recognisable and unique.

I started with the idea of change. The logo would start blank and unattractive and then suddenly gain colour and movement engaging the audience and promising unexpected happenings in the show. Here is my first idea as a 5sec clip:

My next idea was based around the theme of the show(fashion) and I imagined creating an opening sequence which included a wardrobe opening inviting the audience into the show however after hours of experimenting in Adobe After Effect I realised I was in over my head and abandoned that idea.

My latest concept(which i kept on developing) was relatively simple. I created a two coloured, fuzzy(static) background and a simple font with floral accents. Once I imported it to AF I made  random camera movements, made it look like the floral patters are “growing” from the letters and added a splash of paint saying “Fashion Show Edition”. I was happy with this simple design. It’s colourful, has movements and matches the theme of fashion because of the colour scheme and the floral images:

After another meeting we decided not to concentrate on fashion so much and go for a broader audience and a show which changes its main subject each week. This meant that I had to alter my title sequence. I changed the colours to more neutral/male oriented because these colours (green/blue) can target both males and females unlike the previous colours (blue/red) which would be undesirable by the male population. I also changed the splash text to “Group C – Spontaneity”:

The last alteration I made to the opening titles was sparked by the creation of a new logo by our group member; Aukse. Our whole team really liked the design so I decided to implement it in our opening sequence. First thing I did was changing the colour scheme. Unfortunately Aukse only made a small version of her design which meant that there was no option for manipulation. This meant that I had to recreate the logo from scratch for me to be able to fully use it. One party I found harder than I thought would be, was the small patterns in some of the lines. Because I had to re make the logo, I taught myself how to download free and create my own patterns for the paint bucket tool which was a fun experience and something that I would definetly play around with in the future.

The new logo created new possibilities for the movement of the camera in the sequence. I animated the making of the logo and followed it using the camera as well as used the previous function(.wiggle) to create the fast paced motions. I think this really improved the final outcome. I think it appeals to our target audience (18-25 yr old, m/f, students) because of the vibrant colours, rapid movement, paint splash(graffiti-like) and the music(courtesy  of Bossman Static):

TV Studio Update

I have fallen behind with updating my blog. I am still not used to writing posts and updating it with my developments/TV Studio experience. I do manage to take notes which makes the transfer to an online medium much easier.

Our TV Group was chosen to do Spontaneity. I was not happy with that theme because we have weeks to prepare our show and that is the complete opposite of spontaneity. I didn’t know how we will manage to make the show both spontaneous and organised/polished at the same time…

Our first days in the studio were supervised. We were learning about the equipment, job roles and health and safety as well as familiarising with some of the job roles. We also had an extra session with the mentors, unfortunately only 3 of us turned up. This meant that I, Nick and Daisy got an extra session to get to know different roles. It really helped me out to choose the right role for me. After a few sessions of trying out different roles in the studio we decided to choose our roles and take a vote on who’s doing what. I chose the role of a Floor Manager, Camera 1 and Video Mixer. Unfortunately I didn’t make it to be the Floor Manager so I became the camera man.

We also started to brainstorm and came up with the idea of fashion. Not just any fashion, recycled material fashion. This was put forward by some of our team members and inspired by the Recycled Fashion week which is on around the same time our show will go live. After a few sessions with a temporary script, lacking presenters and everyone trying out their new roles; I realised that this wasn’t as easy task as I though. It is much harder to work in a bigger group than our small, short video groups.

15 – 21 April

This is our first week after the Easter Break, we didn’t contact each other that much over the holiday until the last few days when we made sure that everyone knows when and where to meet up. The producers, scriptwriters and director had a meeting on monday to decide on the first draft of the script. I didn’t attend it because as a cameraman, I didn’t think I had a say in the script.


P2P Reflection – Final

I am satisfied with the outcome of this project. I think that it portrays the message that Taewon Hwang wanted to say and the imagery compliments his words. We carefully chose the shots used, the words he said and the general mood that we wanted to achieve.

I think it will attract our target audience which are 20 to 30 year olds, graduates, looking for work or passions in their life but not knowing what that might be. That age range could possibly like the colour correction that I have done which gave this “Instagram” feel to it. Personally I think of it to be over used but I did notice how something as simple as that can change the mood of the film or someones view on it.

As with my Poetic Eyes, I found the sound to be the worst part of the video. Sound is one of the most important part of a documentary which s why it needs to be the best it can be. Next time I will make sure that all electronics and things that could disturb the quality of sound, will be turned off from the very beginning. I will also use a secondary mic as a back up. Editing and checking the sound on bigger speakers or the lecture rooms might be useful because you can not pick up all the sounds and background noise when using macbook speakers or headphones. This is also a good way to check the volumes of tracks as two of our audio tracks were too quiet and too loud.

One other thing we need to improve on is planning and getting to know the interviewee better before the day of the shooting.

Overall I think it was a good piece of work, showing Taewons view of the world well and was enjoyable to watch.
